Reclaiming Our Intuition
Why we need it more than ever to balance our rational thinking
We are all born with intuition
It’s that voice you hear in the back of your head as life happens. As we age, we shut it down to prioritize our rational brain, built to protect us and keep us safe.
More money.
Higher title.
Bigger safety net.
But when is enough? The more we allow rational thinking to drive our decisions (safety and stability), we risk continuing making choices that steer us away from our intuitive nature (our truth, our calling).
Our rational brain was built for survival
Don’t touch that fire.
Make more money.
Keep putting money into your 401k.
The rational brain loves safety and security, but it doesn’t know when to turn off. It continues to urge us to make decisions that keep us comfortable, sometimes to our detriment.
The rational brain absolutely cringes when thinking about dropping out of college, leaving a top consultancy, or quitting a high-paying job. But without it, we would not have Facebook (Mark Zuckerburg dropped out of Harvard), Apple (Tim Cook left IBM) or Kate Spade (Kate Spade left Mademoiselle as Sr. Editor).
For the rational brain to work, we need to have all of the facts and consequences laid out. Our “logic”. The truth is, we are extremely limited in knowledge and our ability to predict the future kind of sucks.
Leverage our rational brain for more of the transactional, day-to-day decisions. Let intuition do the bigger thinking.
Your intuitive brain is the future
So that takes us to intuition. Intuition is that indescribable inner knowing that helps us through difficult decisions in life. It is making a decision not knowing all the facts and relying on feelings alone. This is our ultimate truth, uniquely our own, and our guide in realizing our fullest potential.
We can become more attuned with our intuitive nature using daily practice.
Before making your next decision (even as small as your next meal), pause. What does your intuition tell you? Yes. That’s the voice. Take it. The more often we answer to our intuition, the stronger the voice becomes. By training intuition as a muscle, we can leverage it during times when we need it most.
Allow intuition to help guide life’s goal and purpose. Trust in intuition and let it steer you towards your higher self.
We all have a purpose. Believe it.
I moved to NYC years ago with two suitcases and no job. My rational brain absolutely detested this, but my intuition and heart could not be silenced. After weeks of hard work, I landed a job that would connect me with more opportunities and some of my favorite people in the world.
Now, I am embarking on a new journey that is away from my traditional 9–5p with a steady bi-weekly paycheck. Let’s see where my intuition takes me.
I believe in each and every single one of you and sending you all my ❤️.
Let me know your thoughts and I can ever help you in any way. Let’s make 2019 a year for the books together! #motivation
Sending you my very best. ❤️
Cheers,
Steven
