News and magazines have the challenge of providing a huge breadth of information but also make it easily accessible.

Quanta Magazine

Agency: Dogstudio

Quanta Magazine is an online publication focusing on mathematics, physics, biology and computer science.

Information-dense, but so, so gorgeous. I often refer to Quanta in many of my projects as it balances generous whitespace and content density extremely well.

Rich hero moments
So much delicious whitespace
A starkly different experience for video and other media
Simple and elegant article pages
Highlight and share clips as you read
Utilitarian search

Refinery29

Agency: Wolff Olins

Refinery29 is an online publication covering entertainment news, fashion tips, health, and more.

Refinery29 revitalized their brand with bold images and bright colors. With the redesigns, the story and its images take front and center stage.

Homepage full of stunning images and bright colors
Focus on what matters — the article title and leading image
Dark room video portal
Integrated keyboard interactions

Bloomberg

Agency: Code & Theory

Bloomberg delivers business and markets news, data, analysis, and video to the world, featuring stories from Businessweek and Bloomberg News

They are the shining star of brutalist design. Once widely discounted as a joke by a handful of design critics, their website is standing as strong as ever. With a focus on stories (featured stories get their own custom templates) and readability above all, it’s no wonder that many readers still flock to read content on this website.

starI have a love/hate relationship with this homepage. I don’t know what to look at.
Colorful menu slides in from corners of the screen
Article detail pages with refreshing right rail (most read, top stories, etc.)
These 404 pages are something…
Mega navigation colors the important data
This is the shining star of brutalist design

The Outline

Agency: Code & Theory

The Outline is a new-media venture founded by former Bloomberg Businessweek editor founded in 2016.

A flawless adaptive experience across the board. Desktop is fully-immersive and rich in interaction. Mobile retains all the whimsical vertical and horizontal behaviors we would expect out of Snapchat. Stories are front and center — each with its own delightful set of interactions and creative story.

Well-thought through brutalist design
Menu navigation filled with updating emojis
Bright colors and delightful design patterns
Above all, readability is top priority
Truly a mobile-first experience, taking advantage of vertical screen sizes and horizontal navigation
